If it promises to be a quiet Saturday night and you’re considering renting a movie, may I recommend Bleu starring Juliette Binoche? Bleu is the first film in Kieslowsky’s Trois Couleurs trilogy, which examines the three colors of the French flag concurrently with the three-word motto of the French Revolution. Binoche is at her finest playing a woman tragically “liberated” from her husband and daughter when they die in a car crash. The film is a sophisticated look at grief, so admittedly kind of a downer, but the cinematography and Binoche’s performance are too starkly gorgeous to miss. Check out this old Salon review if you’re not sold yet, but I’ll warn you that it’s a little overly effusive about the other two films in the trilogy. Blanc can’t hold a candle to Bleu, and Rouge, though beautiful in its own right, is not nearly as innovative.
