Phil Nugent is officially the world’s foremost John McCain psychoanalyst:

For many years, reporters would always go with McCain’s version over the evidence of their own senses, but now the spell is broken, and the fact that his lies are seen as lies and his mud described as mud clearly strikes McCain as the most unfair thing in the world. Second most unfair is, of course, the fact that a younger, intelligent person who hasn’t suffered the enormous sacrifices that McCain has for his country–and I’ll hazard a guess that McCain thinks that the sacrifices he’s borne in the name of national sacrifice are greater and more honorable than those borne by anyone, with the possible exception of a few select dead people, who have an advantage when it comes to staying on his good side in that there’s little chance now of their ever contradicting him or getting in his way–might just win the office McCain thinks is his by right.
