Yesterday, Roy Edroso posted about the similarities between Eliot Spitzer and Rudy Giuliani¹, pointing out that:

Like the loathsome Giuliani, Spitzer used the law to hunt and bag high-profile victims, not in order to fulfill justice but to build his reputation as a Tough Guy. It’s bad enough that such disgusting people should exist, but that some of them should be Democrats just makes it worse.

Arriving at an independent conclusion, a professor of mine today also said that Spitzer’s troubles are made of the same cause and material as Giuliani’s marital infidelities. In a way, the similarity is eerie—both men profited from their reputation as tough crime-fighters who would set the tumult of New York in order, whether that tumult take the form of squeegee men or corporate bosses. And in doing so, they felt they could conceal their own personal disarray and abuse of the same sense of criminality which they built a reputation upon prosecuting. Whether there is a psychological profile which links the two of them together, I can’t say. But it should make Democrats pause when trying to defend Spitzer as a liberal hero.

I still, maintain, however, that the worst outcome of this episode so far has been the ugly spectacle of having to imagine a sex-addled Alan Dershowitz lolling about “thinking with a different part of his body.” DO NOT WANT!
