Harvard privilege, in miniature

TWO COMPLETELY TRUE STORIES:

1. This afternoon I was in a sociology class where students learned that 13% of the American population (and 25% of the black population) lives under the $16,000/yr poverty line. Number of people who were visibly shocked by this: almost the entire class.

2. Immediately afterward, at the Memorial Hall shuttle stop, I watched a student from that very same class step forward — not to board the shuttle, but to climb grinning into the plush backseat of a private, black, tinted-windowed, LINCOLN TOWN CAR. Number of people who were visibly shocked by this: just my girlfriend and me.

    I took a class on the sociology of education last year – the first four weeks of it was dedicated to proving that somewhere in the United States, there are really bad public schools. Imagine that!
