Exercises in credentialing
You may have thought that having access to the world’s foremost academic resources and a mainline to the very heart of the Old Boys’ Network would be enough to make Harvard students feel as though they were properly distinguished from the rest of the hoi polloi. But then again, you may not have ever met a Harvard student before.
From last Thursday’s Crimson:
According to Undergraduate Council member Brian S. Gillis ’08 at yesterday’s CCL meeting, current College addresses are confusing to those outside Harvard, especially employers unfamiliar with what “FAS” stands for.
“It obfuscates the relationship between student and college to the point where it hurts recruiting,” Gillis said. He added that unbeknownst to many, the process for this change in username extensions “doesn’t cost a cent.”
Gillis also pointed out that because Harvard Extension school students also use the “@fas” ending, it is difficult to distinguish between these students and those of the College.
Kidd agreed that making a distinction between the two schools would be beneficial.
HEY GUYS DID I MENTION MY EMAIL ADDRESS IS GDNELSON@FAS.HARVARD.EDU1??! DID YOU SEE THAT LAST PART? THAT’S LIKE THE REAL HARVARD, YOU KNOW, THE ONE WHERE SMART PEOPLE GO. YOU WOULD BE A FOOL NOT TO GIVE ME THIS INVESTMENT BANKING JOB RIGHT THIS GODDAMN INSTANT!!
Also, I wasn’t aware that Extension School students creeping in on our territory was such a noisome worry. Maybe it’s really just an altruistic concern: we wouldn’t want the HR people at Google to accidentally employ any Extension School trash, as the entire technology sector would almost certainly collapse as a consequence.
1Actually, it’s not. Suck on it, spambots.
