I have to admit to knowing next-to-nothing about the Samantha Powers fracas that seems from my vague weekend news tidbits to be dominating the primary airwaves. Part of this is no doubt attributable to the fact that my attention appetite for the primary is rapidly waning as a conclusion seems farther and farther away and less and less concrete, but another part of it, I’m convinced, is that we no longer live in an age of mass news consumption.

Instead, we consume memes, and if we weren’t there at their outset, we aren’t a part of them and thus aren’t interested in them. I missed the birth moment of the Powers meme, and, as I’ve had no reason to believe there’s any actual significance to it, I’ve entirely ignored it.

So I find myself in a position of total political ignorance: I legitimately haven’t read anything more than an opening sentence or two about the entire situation. And yet I feel absolutely no compulsion to do so, much in the same way, I imagine, that somebody who hadn’t a clue what a LOLcat was would have much compulsion to read through a page of them.
